Position Overview
The Community Placement Coordinator provides students with consistent guidance and support from their arrival at the Maya Angelou Schools through their return to community schools. The worksite and tour of duty for this position are located in a juvenile correctional facility.
Responsibilities
- Introducing students to the Maya Angelou Schools, conducting welcome intake, and discussions about school culture and expectations
- Introducing students to program materials and tools, portfolios, rubrics, expectations, and class schedules
- Meeting regularly with each student during his entire tenure
- Engaging parents and student in discussions regarding behavior and progress
- Facilitating each student’s transition upon his release including identification of placement and enrollment in community school/program
- Coordinating with the school professionals and parents to design and implement an individual plan for each student
- Managing the details of the individual plan and working with parents, school staff, and community partners to ensure that each student is prepared for his reintegration
- Maintaining a working knowledge of community resources available to students and families
- Making site visits to each student’s educational or vocational placement site
- Maintaining and recording appropriate data in a timely manner
- Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement.
- Facilitating trainings and professional development workshops as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, sociology, or social science (preferred)
- Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- An unyielding belief that with the appropriate support, coupled with high expectations, all students can develop prosocial and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed, and then build on this success to manage effectively beyond the school and center
