Social Work Intern Job Description 

The University of Maryland Support, Advocacy, Freedom, and Empowerment (SAFE) Center for Human  Trafficking Survivors is the first university-based center that combines service, research, and advocacy to  address the issue of human trafficking. It is an initiative of the University of Maryland, College Park and  the University of Maryland, Baltimore, through the MPower program. Through in-house services and  collaborative partnerships, the SAFE Center provides direct social, legal, primary medical, mental health,  and economic empowerment services to human trafficking survivors. We serve U.S. and foreign-born  adult and child survivors of sex and labor trafficking. The SAFE Center is initially focused on Prince George’s  and Montgomery counties, with a longer-term focus on the state of Maryland. 

The SAFE Center is located adjacent to the College Park campus. 

Job Summary 

The Social Work Intern for the SAFE Center assists with providing quality case management, crisis  intervention, educational workshops, and community resources for survivors of Human Trafficking. 

Job Responsibilities 

Act as a mandated reporter on all incidents of child abuse and neglect and elder abuse, self harm or harm to others 

Provide timely follow-up calls and reminders for clients as necessary 

Engage in one-on-one meetings with clients to develop goals, assess needs, and develop safety  plans 

Research community resources for clients in Prince George’s, Montgomery County, & Maryland Organize educational family and/or Life Skill workshops 

Create bilingual announcements and flyers for family services trainings and events Attend group and individual supervision meetings on a weekly basis and in a prompt manner,  and with an openness to learning and receiving feedback 

Participate in any necessary professional development trainings 

Assist Social Services and other departments with other projects as required Perform additional job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned 

The internship will be a hybrid model (in-person and virtual) where the interns will work with  clients or on projects such as support groups for/with survivors 

Input case notes and upload sensitive documents to Apricot in a timely manner 

Experience, Essential Skills and Personal Characteristics 

Must be able to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner Must be able to maintain appropriate client boundaries 

Must be comfortable working with diverse clients 

Must be comfortable working collectively on group projects, workshops, and other assignments

Prerequisites 

Must be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in a human services-based field  to provide case management services  

Preferably be bilingual in Spanish-English 

Must have knowledge working with MS Office programs ( I.e. Microsoft Word, Outlook,  Publisher, and Excel) 

A Background check may be required.
