The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services has the following internships for the Spring 2023 semester, located at 100 Community Place, Crownsville, MD 21032:
- Assist with the preparation and planning of regular meetings, which include the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Operational Opioid Command Center, Maryland Behavioral Health Administration, and various Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) related working groups (50%)
- Support research and development of reports such as the Annual Opioid Use Disorder Examinations and Treatment Report and various workgroup findings and recommendations reports (20%)
- Review and summarize grant program activities as reported by grantees through the Operational Opioid Command Center (20%)
- Other tasks as assigned (10%)
- Assist with preparation and planning of regular meetings, which include the Justice Reinvestment Oversight Board, Justice Reinvestment Advisory Board, Justice Reinvestment Coordinating Committee, and various JRA-related working groups (50%)
- Support research and development of reports such as the Annual Justice Reinvestment Report and various Workgroup findings and recommendations reports (20%)
- Review and summarize grant program activities as reported by grantees through the Performance Incentive Grant Fund (20%)
- Other tasks as assigned (10%)
Another function would be involvement with the Violence Intervention and Protection Program (VIPP). The purpose of this program is to support effective violence reduction strategies, specifically gun violence, through evidence-based and/or evidence-informed health programs.
Working in the implementation of the P.R.O.T.E.C.T. (Public Resources Organizing to End Crime Together) Program. The Program is designed to maximize the use of State, local, and community resources to combat neighborhood decline in the City of Baltimore and throughout the State, and support comprehensive strategies to reduce crime and fear in those communities.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with preparation and planning of regular meetings, which include monthly MCIN and Heroin Coordinator meetings. Identify breaking cases that support the positive impact of the MCIN program (20%)
- Assist with the Violence Intervention and Prevention Program and hold quarterly meetings with the council (20%)
- Assist in the implementation of P.R.O.T.E.C.T. (Public Resources Organizing to End Crime Together) Program. (30 %)
- Support research and development of reports. (20%)

Research & Evaluation The Intern will experience the inner workings of state government from the vantage point of the Executive branch. This Intern will assist the Research, Analysis and Evaluation Division with collecting various criminal justice data and research to assist the Agency with making data-driven decisions and utilizing evidence based practices.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist the Research & Analysis Chief with various research and statistical analysis on criminal justice data and programs;
- Providing in-depth quantitative analysis and research on criminal justice topics to support public safety policy and legislation;
- Assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of criminal justice programs;
- Analyzing performance measures
- Assisting with any statistical analysis of various legislative reports required under Maryland law including but not limited to traffic stops, asset forfeiture and juveniles charged as adults
- Becoming involved with various criminal justice data improvement projects;
- Attend meetings with various criminal justice stakeholders at the local, state, and county level
- Maintaining and monitoring project plans, project schedules, work hours, budgets, and expenditures.
- Organizing, attending, and participating in stakeholder meetings as directed by the LEAD Program Director.
- Documenting and following up on important actions and decisions from meetings.
- Preparing necessary presentation materials for meetings.
- Providing administrative support as needed.
- Undertaking project tasks as required.
- In-person site visits with the Director when appropriate.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the coordination and planning of the Annual Crime Victims’ Rights Conference and the Annual Memorial Services for Crime Victims and Their Families, held during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (50%)
- Assist with the coordination and planning of regular meetings, which include the Maryland State Board of Victim Services and the Governor’s Family Violence Council, and related working groups (25%)
- Review certification applications for Abuse Intervention Programs and assist with the certification process (15%)
- Other tasks as assigned (10%)
The successful candidates for all the above internships will:

- Program Dates: January 2023-May 2023, up to 30 hours per week.
- This 12-week program provides students interested in criminal justice with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to the mission of the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services to improve public safety in Maryland.
- This program provides an opportunity to network with professionals from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Department of Health, Administrative Office of the Courts, Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy, local corrections, and other agencies and others who will support professional growth and career interests.
- Learned outcomes or skills learned throughout this program include developing work habits and attitudes necessary for career success in the criminal justice field; receiving informal feedback and mentoring from the Director of Justice Reinvestment; developing communication, interpersonal, and other critical skills necessary for success in the workforce; and building a record of professional work experience in the public sector.
