Human Rights Investigations Research Internship – Spring 2023 (Remote)
The Investigations Unit at Human Rights First works to uncover human rights violations and hold perpetrators to account. The intern will focus on researching those who commit human rights violations. Interns will be based in our Washington, D.C. office. All internships are unpaid, though externship credit may be available through schools.
A computer and stable internet connection are required for this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Desk-based research on those who commit human rights violations, including oligarchs and govt officials in eastern Europe and elsewhere.
- Work with investigative journalists to research methods of perpetrators.
- Use publicly available information to help compile a list of officials in governments and elsewhere who commit violations.
- Produce research on officials and others who are already sanctioned in various jurisdictions for their crimes.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated interest in human rights, impunity and accountability.
- Excellent writing and editing skills in English;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Excellent research abilities;
- Experience handling sensitive information
- Ability in another language is desirable. An eastern European language or Arabic preferable.
- Ability to handle several tasks at once while working independently or as a member of a team.
EDUCATION: Undergraduate, graduate, and/or recent graduate.
COMPENSATION: Unpaid
START DATE: January 23, 2023
TIME COMMITMENT: 15 hours per week minimum
