Undergraduate prisoners’ rights interns work directly with our Prisoners’ Rights team to respond to requests for assistance and advocate for people who are incarcerated in the DC Department of Corrections or in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Prisoners’ Rights interns have their own caseload of letters from people who are incarcerated. Work assignments typically include:
- Responding to correspondence from individuals who are incarcerated.
- Drafting and updating handouts and self-help materials.
- Participating in legal calls with clients and intake calls with potential clients and/or loved ones of people who are incarcerated.
- Conducting research on relevant issues and policies related to incarceration.
- Participating in team meetings and providing administrative support to the team.
Undergraduate interns working on prisoners’ rights will also have the opportunity to assist with interviewing individuals in the DC Department of Corrections.
Applicants must be able to receive school credit for participating in the Fall and Spring internships and must be able to commit at least 15 hours/week. Summer internships are typically full time for ten weeks and do not require school credit.
The Prisoners’ Rights Team is currently accepting applications for the Winter and Spring 2023 Prisoners’ Rights Internship.
The Winter and Spring 2023 internship will be a combination of in-person and remote work. Fully remote internships are not available at this time. Undergraduate internships are unfortunately unpaid.
The deadline to apply for the Winter and Spring 2023 Prisoners’ Rights Internship is December 5, 2022. Applicants may be contacted for an interview after that date.
