INTERNSHIP DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The National Policing Institute is seeking a spring intern to work with our Center for Targeted Violence Prevention (CTVP) Department. The CTVP has a partnership with Michigan State University which builds on and expands the work begun in 2018 when the Center was created. The Center has engaged in research, reviews of targeted violence events, countering violent extremism projects, technical assistance, and educational programs.

Job Description:
Interns will work on a variety of tasks to include research assistance and support for training and technical assistance efforts. We would like for the candidates to possess a proactive approach to the job and look for ways to improve the project or add value to the deliverables. Internships are flexible and can be structured around a student’s course schedule.

Criminal Justice, Political Science, Social Science Majors, or related fields

  • Research information using online academic databases or other publications. 
  • Assist with data collection and designing charts, graphs, and tables. 
  • Organize and clean criminal justice data. 
  • Assist with dataset/database management in support of the Averted School Violence Database 
  • Through research, support ongoing projects and staff that are engaged in the organization’s 
  • programmatic work. 
  • Attend panel discussions, symposia, and other meetings. 
  • Conduct outreach assistance to partner organizations. 
  • Proofread, edit, and check documents.  
  • Assist with the development of written products including policy briefs, research memos, and 
  • Co-author a short research article in an online publication devoted to terrorism and targeted violence. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Possess a commitment to advancing the National Policing Institute values, mission, goals, and programs, with an understanding of a range of criminal justice issues and their implications.
  • Exhibit excellent research, writing, editing skills, and an analytical mind.
  • Knowledge of American Psychological Association (APA) writing/reference techniques (a standard in the field).
  • Highly organized and have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Contain excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills who will work with a range of staff, including data-driven researchers.
  • Exhibit attention to detail.
  • Display excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity and the ability to work independently and in a team setting.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Furthermore, applicants must be current students and/or have been accepted to enter an advanced degree program (within the next year). Non-degree seeking students are ineligible.

Position and Salary:  This is a non-paid internship. It can be used for academic credit.
